12/17/06Due to an illness situation, I have had to fill in for the Girl’s Coach at school for the last 10days or so. I can do so because I have several years experience in that position, but I must admit the experience took place several years ago. It has been interestingsitting on the bench and assuming a position I filled (and I must say enjoyed)as a much younger man. Many things have changed but actually, the job,the difficulties and the problems faced have not changed very much. It isalso abundantly clear to me that high school coaching (for the most part) isprobably a young man’s job. The long bus rides, the huge amount of energyand time required seem to prove that to be the case.
Actually, as we get older many roles change. We may become more of a consultant thana participant; more of the overseer than the doer and more of a resource than a source. Andthe fact of the matter is that all this is OK because God intended for age to bring wisdomand for the younger to utilize the wisdom of the aged.Bob
