Anyone who knows me knows that one of the things I value the most highly is family.  I
am always very pleased to be able to do something good for them and will stand ready to
do about anything it takes to see that they have what they need.  I am confident
that it was my father who instilled this value in me and he did
not do it by words, but rather by deeds.

My father was a man who believed in hard work and did so almost every day
as if the very food we ate that day depended on it even though it did not.  Yet
I remember one summer when his older sister was dying of cancer and Dad put
almost everything on hold just so that he could be there to sit with her and help her
until the end.  I remember another time when he and my mother did the same thing for
a nephew on my mother’s side.  I don’t ever remember them explaining it,
it was just something that was to be done that way.

My hope is that I have instilled these values and others just as solidly
in my children and in the same undeniable way.
