Lately there has been a great deal said about heroes for one reason or another and it
started me thinking about who my heroes have been and are yet today.  I remember a
teacher who was able to challenge my friends and me as eighth graders in a
small and somewhat limited school.  I remember my high school coach who was as
competitive as any man I ever knew and yet never was seen as anything
but a gentlemen at the games.

Later, my heroes changed somewhat as I was moved by the strength of a man named
Homer Book who overcame many problems with his health and yet
never seemed to complain or be in a bad mood.

Today, I find my heroes being people I do not know who I see hugging their
families as they go off to war.  Or showing great strength
and resolve in the face of disaster.

One thing is probably true, any or all of these people would not think of themselves
as heroes, just people doing the best they could.  And
after all, isn’t that the best hero of all?
